Basketball
globalism is the new black and, for the most part,
I'm quite pleased with that. There's much more
talent in the NBA than there was fifteen years ago,
and the rise of international basketball has played
a big role in that. Who would have imagined
that a soft, teenage German would turn into a 7-foot Mitch Richmond? Or that
a miniature Frenchman would dominate the
paint and beat out the greatest player of this generation
(a Virgin Islander) for Finals MVP?
Fifteen years ago, who could have predicted that the
NBA would feature a dominant 7'6" center who’s unstoppable
in the post, comfortable from 20’, shoots almost 90%
from the line, and speaks Chinese? And these are just some of the top foreigners

Countdown

With
less than 3 weeks before the start of training camp,
Donnie Walsh & Mike DAntoni find themselves
in a bit of a quandary. Both men represent a clean
slate for Knicks basketball, but baring a major trade,
they will field a team virtually identical to last

Adventures
In Free Agency
LeBron
James and Chris Paul were superstars almost before
they could grow chin hair. Receiving contract extensions
for the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining
Agreement, was a given. Josh Smith, as I wrote on
Monday, is a little...flighty, but it was still no-brainer
to invest in him long-term. It's not usually such
an easy decision. In the case of Smith and Dwight
Howard, their physical gifts are so extraordinary,
elite among NBA players, that, barring injury, it's
hard to imagine them not progressing enough to warrant
big salaries. But most prospects have to match their
athletic gifts with considerable skill development
to be worth star money. And most haven't proven their
mettle by the time they reach free-agency and ask
for it. Teams are left to decide whether to make long-term
commitments, for as much as a 6th of their team salary,
to players who have yet to earn it on the court. Teams
have to predict who's going to make The Leap to stardom.
Making the wrong decision can screw up a team for
years, typically by vastly overpaying for a bust.
Since most teams have itchy trigger fingers, getting
burned by letting future stars walk, is much less
common. These decisions would be a difficult for any
company to make, much less the inane legions who manage
NBA teams....FULL ARTICLE

This

NBA players are quick to point out that The Garden
is their favorite arena. Some cite the glitz of Broadway
or the glamour of celebrity row. Others gaze into
the rafters & consider the privilege of playing
on the same floor as some of the NBA's greatest. For
the Knicks of past & present, they view The Garden
as home and cherish the rich history associated with
it. From Willis Reed's heroic walk through the tunnel

longed served as the backdrop to some of the greatest

Artest

When
the news broke that the Houston Rockets had acquired

and acquiring Artest immediately makes them strong
contenders. An All-NBA defender, Artest also gives
the Rockets a scoring trio rivaled only by Boston,
San Antonio, Phoenix, and the Lakers. My head is still

I was also once the kind of kid who would take something

Summer
League Game 1 Recap 7-14-08
Danilo
Gallinari's NBA debut was largely an uneven performance.
Fortunately for the Knicks rookie, his second half
scoring outburst helped propel the team to a 97-94
victory at the Las Vegas Summer League. With all eyes
on the Italian forward, Gallinari started off the
game going scoreless for the first two quarters and
committed several foolish fouls. Gallinari appeared
hesitant to shoot from the perimeter or attack the
basket. With his offensive game stuck in neutral,
Gallinari moved the basketball well and played unselfishly.
After a series in which he grabbed a defensive &
offensive rebound within a short span, Gallinari's
attempt at a dribble-drive that resulted in a wild
layup attempt that confounded the coaching staff &
his teammates. After being abused by Robert "Tractor"
Traylor and fellow rookie JJ Hickson (26 points on
11-15 shooting), Gallinari was pulled by Knicks coach

It's
difficult to understate the importance of patience and
prudence to roster management in the NBA. In the NFL,
teams can cut players to gain salary cap space, while
in the MLB, having no salary cap, fiscal responsibility

guaranteed player contracts and trade restrictions make
poor free agent signings and ill-considered trades far
more damaging. Stupid General Managers can be fired, but

Pick, Several Options
Donnie
Walsh take note: Danny Ainge has given you the blueprint to go from worst to first
in one year. Ainge's plan to rebuild the Boston Celtics from a 24 game winner
to an NBA champion started with a savvy draft day deal. After losing out on a
golden opportunity to draft Greg Oden thanks to the unlucky bounce of a few ping
pong balls, Ainge parlayed his misfortune into a championship building block.
Trading the 5th overall selection in the 2007 NBA Draft for perennial All-Star
Ray Allen turned out to be a bank heist for the much-maligned GM. Rather than
gamble on pairing Paul Pierce with rookie Jeff Green and facing 2-3 more years
of rebuilding, Ainge secured the services of one of the league's premier shooters.
He also dumped the salaries of Wally Szczerbiak & Delonte West while picking
up an additional draft pick (# 35) that became Glen "Big Baby" Davis.
A few weeks later, Ainge's placed a call into former teammate Kevin McHale regarding
Kevin Garnett's availability and the rest is shall we say championship history....FULL

Lost
Opportunity The 1996 NBA Draft
As
the NBA playoffs take center stage, the Knicks turn their attention to finding

would become a fan favorite & dunk champion, but a role player at best. With

Jackson. Ironically, Jackson has become a hot commodity for Knicks executives
21 years later. Noteworthy selections following Jackson include Rod Strickland
