Falling
Star: Reflections on the Stephon Marbury era
|
| From
the asphalt of Rucker Park to the hardwood of Madison
Square Garden, New York has long been the home to prodigious
point guards. Nate Archibald, Pearl Washington, Mark Jackson,
Rod Strickland, Kenny Smith & Kenny Anderson all represent
the rich tradition of floor generals to come out of the
city, but never has there been a player so dynamic and
equally enigmatic as Stephon Xavier Marbury. From Lincoln
High to Georgia Tech to the NBA, Marbury's tale is both
impressive & maddening....FULL

Ok
I
guess weve all seen Gallinari play by now and
read the beat writers stuff. Based on my initial impression,
this kid will have to play SF at least for his first
1-2 seasons. Problem is, Chandler should be the starting
SF. This is why I was concerned about Walsh taking another
swingman because at some point you have to let you best
players develop and give them 30-35 minutes a night
at their natural position.
Now
Gallinari will have to get real minutes on the court
by playing PF. JJ Hickson (picked 18th in the draft)
was mauling Gallinari inside and hes 2 inches
shorter than Gallinari. No way this kid can guard some
of the best PFs in the league for more than 10 minutes
a night. Hell have to come off the bench now.
This
is my biggest problem with the post Van Gundy Knicks:
They never have a balanced roster and thats why
theyve won 30% of their games since Jeff left.
This is why I wanted Augustine over Gallinari. We would
have had a natural PG (Larry Brown is raving about this
kid in Charlotte) to replace Steph and saved the $12MM
we spent on Duhon. Now Walsh has to trade Zach or D.
Lee to get this kid some minutes.
Dont
get me wrong, I think the kid showed he can play a little,
but I dont go nuts with 6-10 Euro guys make uncontested
jump shots. If you saw the shots Wilson Chandler made,
those were big time basketball moves.
If
the season started today, Id start
Duhon,
Crawford, Chandler, D. Lee & Curry.
Gotta
move Steph & Zach.

Summer
League Game 1 Recap 7-14-08
|
Danilo
Gallinari's NBA debut was largely an uneven performance.
Fortunately for the Knicks rookie, his second half
scoring outburst helped propel the team to a 97-94
victory at the Las Vegas Summer League. With all eyes
on the Italian forward, Gallinari started off the
game going scoreless for the first two quarters and
committed several foolish fouls. Gallinari appeared
hesitant to shoot from the perimeter or attack the
basket. With his offensive game stuck in neutral,
Gallinari moved the basketball well and played unselfishly.
After a series in which he grabbed a defensive &
offensive rebound within a short span, Gallinari's
attempt at a dribble-drive that resulted in a wild
layup attempt that confounded the coaching staff &
his teammates. After being abused by Robert "Tractor"
Traylor and fellow rookie JJ Hickson (26 points on
11-15 shooting), Gallinari was pulled by Knicks coach
Phil Weber....FULL ARTICLE

Should Steph Retire? 7-14-08
|
| There
has been a lot of press lately on the possibility
of a Marbury buy-out by the Knicks. He is quite
simply not on the short list of point guards that
Mike DAntoni or Donnie Walsh would want
running their up-tempo system. So what will Marbury
do, where will he go? There has been some rumors
that Marbury may be interested in playing for
the Celtics next year to reunite with Garnett,
however Paul Pierce has made it clear in the last
week after his comments and his opinion of Marbury
that he didnt mean he wanted him on the
Celtics, so I doubt well see that happen.
Other teams still looking for a point guard are
the Miami Heat, Denver Nuggets, and Phoenix Suns.
The Suns are seeking more of a back-up role which
I have a hard time believing a guy with an ego
as big as Marburys would be willing to accept.
The Heat seem dedicated to giving the reins to
Mario Chalmers when hes ready, but I doubt
Marbury is the type of character they want influencing
their young draftee. And finally there is no way
in hell the Denver Nuggets would pair Marbury
with Allen Iverson, and Carmelo Anthony. If they
did they would be the all-selfish team. Their
offense would look more like a game of british
bulldog than it would an attempt to score....FULL

Do No Harm: 3 Teams, 3 Moves, 1 Right Decision
|
| It's
difficult to understate the importance of patience and
prudence to roster management in the NBA. In the NFL,
teams can cut players to gain salary cap space, while
in the MLB, having no salary cap, fiscal responsibility
is managed through rampant collusion. In the NBA however,
guaranteed player contracts and trade restrictions make
poor free agent signings and ill-considered trades far
more damaging. Stupid General Managers can be fired, but
their failures devastate franchises for years after the
first cathartic headline, with the mangled rosters of
bad contracts they leave behind....FULL

Here is piece of a story that Alan
Hahn wrote in todays Newsday that is a must read
and is loaded with good little tidbits.....
| The
team will begin practicing in Las Vegas tonight
and will be run by assistant coach Phil Weber,
the former Long Island Lutheran standout who followed
Mike D'Antoni here from the Phoenix Suns. D'Antoni
will be on hand and Donnie Walsh will arrive Sunday.
Walsh
says he doesn't put a lot of emphasis on performances
at the summer league, but instead is more interested
in mingling with the executives from the 20
other NBA teams that participate in it. After
signing guard Chris Duhon, Walsh said earlier
this week that he is not finished retooling
the roster He will remain involved in trade
talks throughout the summer with an eye on jettisoning
some of the bigger contracts while also filling
holes in the roster.
It's worth mentioning that before guard Baron
Davis finally agreed to a five-year, $65-million
contract with the Los Angeles Clippers yesterday,
his representatives checked out the Knicks'
interest in him, a source told Newsday. In May,
Newsday reported that Davis, before he decided
to opt out of his contract with the Golden State
Warriors, reached out through intermediaries
to see if the Knicks had any interest in acquiring
him in a trade.
"It
clearly seemed that New York would have been
Baron's first choice if there were a fit,"
said a person with knowledge of Davis' situation.
Walsh
never got too deeply involved in pursuing Davis
because the Knicks, with an eye on being under
the salary cap by 2010, would not commit contractually
to anything beyond 2010 in a sign-and-trade
scenario.
There
are other situations still brewing. The most
notable involves another Warriors guard, Monta
Ellis, who is a restricted free agent and, according
to multiple sources, has a desire to play in
D'Antoni's system. A person with knowledge of
the situation said a sign-and-trade is a long
shot, however, because a third team would have
to be involved to make the deal work for both
sides. The Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers
are in hot pursuit, just in case Warriors executive
Chris Mullin decides to trade Ellis.
Walsh
plans on staying involved in all of the talk
but likely will put more emphasis on making
smaller moves to improve specific areas of the
team, such as perimeter shooting. Long Islander
Wally Szczerbiak is being shopped by the Cleveland
Cavaliers ( the Nets reportedly declined a trade
that would have sent the rapidly declining Vince
Carter and his hefty contract the other way),
and he fits in so many ways. Szczerbiak is an
excellent shooter and, perhaps just as important,
he has an expiring contract...FULL

| Eight
NBA teams were officially notified of their luxury-tax
obligations for the 2007-08 season via league
memorandum in the early minutes of Wednesday morning,
with the New York Knicks again topping the list
of taxpayers.
Teams with a payroll above $67.865 million last
season are required to pay one tax dollar for
every dollar they sit over the threshold. That
total, for the Knicks, is nearly $20 million
-- $19,723,946 to be exact.

2010 the Jazz may receive the Knicks protected
lottery pick, which Thomas originally traded to Phoenix
in the Stephon Marbury deal.
The
pick later traded from Phoenix to Utah as part
of a deal for Tom Gugliotta has been protected
since 2006. But in 2010 it is not protected, so if the
Knicks fail to reach the playoffs that season, Utah
gets a lottery pick.
The
pick was protected through the 25th pick in 2006. Last
year it was protected through the 24th pick, this year
it is protected through the 23rd pick and next year
the 22nd pick.....Ughh

What To Do With Steph 7-9-08

Newsday's
Alan Hahn writes::
|
Buyout
Marbury
has one year remaining on his contract worth
$21.5 million. The Knicks could negotiate a
buyout of that amount and cut him from the roster.
The buyout amount, likely slightly less than
the full contract, would still count against
the salary cap, but just for this season. Marbury
would be free to sign with any other NBA team.
Chances: Most likely.
Trade
An
expiring contract has value on the trade market
and there are teams out there - Boston, Miami,
San Antonio and Golden State, to name a few
- that are in need of a quality backup point
guard. The Knicks could try to swing a deal
for a player or players who better fit their
plans, yet also have contracts that expire before
2010. The only problem here is any team with
an interest in Marbury knows they can get him
as a free agent once the Knicks buy him out.
Chances: Possible.
Keep
him
Considering
that he is playing for what would likely be
his last NBA contract, Marbury may be motivated
to play hard and keep a more disciplined mental
approach. And if he isn't and instead once again
becomes a distraction, you can always put him
on the inactive list and pay him to stay away.
It's a high risk/reward option. Chances: Least
likely....FULL

| The
Knicks hold their first summer-league practice
Friday in Las Vegas, and Gallinari is to debut
Monday vs. Cleveland.
The
Knicks bought out Gallinari's contract with
Milan for $500,000. Second-year man Wilson Chandler,
plus 2006 first-rounders Renaldo Balkman and
Mardy Collins, also will play, as will Nate
Robinson, who will do it for the fourth straight
year.
The
Knicks will hold an adjacent voluntary minicamp
in which Marbury and Duhon are expected to participate.

What I Wanted To Read... 7-8-08
|
Marc
Berman writes in the NY Post:
| A
source aware of Marbury's status claims a decision
won't be made on his future until August, at the
earliest, after Knicks president Donnie Walsh
plays the trade market. The Knicks want to see
what more they can do before deciding whether
to waive Marbury.
Walsh
also wants to evaluate disappointing second-year
point guard Mardy Collins and combo guard Nate
Robinson during summer league.
Walsh
told a confidant last week he wants Duhon to
push Marbury in training camp. But Walsh, a
lawyer, has made misleading statements before
during his brief Knicks reign.
"It's
premature," one source said of Marbury's
release. "That hasn't been decided. There
are other things that can happen."
Despite
the company line of evaluating the roster in
August, this doesn't reek of a basketball decision.
Marbury is better than any PG the Knicks have,
but it seems the team wants Marbury back only
as a last resort.
Marbury
will perhaps become the scapegoat for last year's
sexual harassment defeat, or his exit could
become a symbol of next season's "fresh
start."
Despite
attempts, it's unlikely Marbury can be traded
because they'd have to take back $21 million
of contracts that expire before 2010.
Jamal
Crawford, being shopped because his contract
goes into 2010, could be traded, creating a
stronger need for Marbury, whom Mike D'Antoni
hasn't discounted playing alongside Duhon.
His
friends say Marbury isn't worried about future
employment if released. The Celtics would be
on his radar, considering they need point-guard
help and former teammate Kevin Garnett respects
his game more than anyone....FULL
ARTICLE
|
There
are a couple things that bother me about this article.
For starters, the Knicks are shopping Jamal Crawford?
Jamal Crawford is the best player on the team, and
probably the best character guy on the team. His contract
is not that bad when you compare it to the rest of
the team. Jamal started to take on a leadership role
last year. He is the most clutch Knick since LJ and
a guy I want on this team the next time we get into
the playoffs because of that. Secondly, if the Knicks
release Marbury and he goes and plays for the Celtics
and starts coming into the Garden and beating us by
50, that will just be flat out terrible.

Duhon
in, Starbury in limbo

| With
the free agent signing of Chris Duhon, Donnie Walsh has
finally addressed the most glaring need on the Knicks
roster. Duhon, a career backup for the Chicago Bulls,

The
Marbury Watch 7-6-08
|
Frank
Isola from The Daily News writes:
Jettisoning
Marbury Is A Positive Step
Heres a newsflash:
Stephon Marbury is a better player than Chris
Duhon. Then again, Marbury has been the teams
best point guard since the day he arrived in the
ill-fated trade with the Phoenix Suns five years
ago. And what has that gotten the Knicks other
than a lot of losses and plenty of controversies?
Donnie
Walsh and Mike DAntoni fully understand
that Duhon cant compare to Marbury when
it comes to pure talent. But Walsh and DAntoni
also realize that you cant change the
culture at Madison Square Garden without removing
the player who has come to symbolizes everything
we despise about the Knicks this decade.
Marbury
has been the Knicks franchise player for five
years and he has done more to harm the franchise
in that time than just about any player in club
history. It is time to move on. Walsh and DAntoni
know it and deep down I believe that Marbury
knows that he needs a change of venue. In fact,
I wouldnt be surprised if he ends up on
Miami or becomes a back-up with San Antonio
or Boston.
The
uninformed will buy into Marburys claim
that this will be my year. Heres
another newsflash: Hes been saying that
for the past five years. Maybe things will be
better for Marbury in the 2008-09 season but
it just wont happen in New York.
Walsh
and DAntoni need to rebuild the roster
and improve the chemistry in the locker room.
Removing Marbury accomplishes both goals. We
know, we know. Duhon is no Marbury. And thats
what we like about him already. - The

this in mind: No matter where Stephon Marbuy has been
his whole career, once he is off the team the team starts
to get better. Expect the same thing to happen here...

My Take On Ellis 7-4-08
|
In
Today's Newsday
Alan Hahn reports:
| While
the Knicks continue to wait for Chris Duhon to
accept or reject their offer, another interesting
scenario is beginning to surface involving Monta
Ellis, the dynamic young guard for the Golden
State Warriors.
Ellis,
22, a restricted free agent, is starting to
draw a great deal of attention in several sign-and-trade
scenarios. A person with knowledge of the situation
said nine teams have made inquiries about Ellis.
The Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers have
shown the most interest. The Knicks, who are
searching for point guard help, are not one
of those teams, but a second source said the
Knicks have been monitoring the situation. Warriors
executive vice president Chris Mullin has maintained
he intends to sign Ellis.
Knicks
president Donnie Walsh and Mullin are close,
so Walsh won't act unless Mullin is ready to
deal. The source said the potential of an Ellis-Jamal
Crawford backcourt "would be dynamic"
in the Mike D'Antoni system. Both players averaged
20 points per game this past season. A person
close to Ellis said the lightning-quick guard
"would be very interested in the Knicks"
and especially playing for D'Antoni....FULL
ARTICLE
|
Ellis is said to be looking for 10 million a year for
5 or 6 years. That seems like alot to me for a guy that
isnt a true point guard. I don't see how the Knicks
can make a play for Ellis and stick with their plan
for 2010. The Knicks would have to make a sign-and-trade
for him. Probably something like David Lee, Nate Robinson,
and the expiring contract of Malik Rose. Would the Warriors
do something like that? Maybe but i doubt it. For us
however, I feel that if we are going to move Lee we
need to do so in a package with Randolph. Keep in mind,
the most important piece of the offseason is if we can
unload Randolph which remains to be seen. Have a fun
4th of July and remember fingers don't grow back.

Seeing
What I Missed... 7-3-08
|
So
as I mentioned yesterday I was traveling all day today.
Just got back home so I am checking in to see what I missed.
Alan
Hahn wrote in his blog:
| Last
night word got out that Duhon could be ready to
make a decision as early as today and was deciding
between the Knicks and Magic.
There
was some thought that he was interested in the
Knicks because of the opportunity to win a starting
role. But after reading these quotes from Duhon's
agent, Kevin Bradbury, it sounds like Duhon walked
away from his meeting with the Knicks unimpressed
with what they had to offer and not just because
the Knicks put up just a two-year deal compared
to three from the Magic.
"Chris
wants to help a team win a championship, that's
what Orlando is trying to do," Bradbury told
the Sentinel. "That's different than a team
looking to rebuild."....FULL
ARTICLE
He also wrote about the Telfair
rumors:
Yes the Knicks have inquired
about Sebastian Telfair, but as much as Telfair
would love to play for his hometown team I'd say
it's doubtful he'd want to come here if his cousin
is staying around, too.
There
has been enough evidence in recent months to suggest
the apparent "feud" that had existed
between Telfair and Marbury has diminished, but
to have them in the same locker room, competing
for the same job, would not be a healthy situation.
Unless the Knicks are his only option, Telfair
and his representatives have to believe anywhere
else would be a better opportunity if the Knicks
plan on keeping Marbury for the season.
Also,
the Knicks are really looking for more of a playmaker-type
and Telfair, while he's got a heck of a handle,
is more of a one-on-one guy than he is a facilitator....FULL
ARTICLE
And
wrote about Monta Ellis' sitiuation:
There's reason to believe Monta Ellis might try
to force his way out of Golden State. The dazzling
22-year-old guard is a restricted free agent,
but I've been hearing whispers that he's putting
more emphasis on pushing another team to make
a play for him -- the Knicks would have to sign-and-trade
-- than he is on inking a long-term deal to stay
with the Warriors and take on a bigger responsibility
in the wake of Baron Davis' absence........
Did a little poking around on this one and despite
interest from Ellis in playing for Mike D'Antoni
and in New York, at this point I'd call it a longshot,
at best. You're talking at least a five or six
year deal averaging about $10 million per to start.
And, of course, the Warriors would have to want
something off the Knicks roster that matches.
You would think they would want a point guard
because with Davis and Ellis gone, they're empty
in the backcourt. No match here with the Knicks,
unless you can convince them that Nate Robinson
can be an effective player under Don Nelson (not).
The
people I talk to tell me that despite the long-term
committment it would take (which doesn't help
the 2010 plan), the Knicks would love to add a
player like this, who would fit into D'Antoni's
system well....FULL

Trying To Skimp On Duhon 7-2-08
|
The
Hoop Doctors Report:
|
Sources
have said that the Knicks verbally offered Duhon
a two year deal worth approximately $3-4 million
per. All indications are that Duhon would like
to play for the Knicks; the only bump in the
road might be the length of the contract offer
from New York. The Knicks are adamant about
not signing a contract for a point guard longer
than two years as that is the magic number to
ensuring that in 2010 they have plenty of salary
cap space and flexibility to sign a big name
free agent. Duhon also has visits lined up with
the Magic, Heat, and Nuggets......... Should
Duhon decide to pass on the deal with the Knicks
and play elsewhere, the Knicks still have a
variety of short term point guard options they
could pursue. Carlos Arroyo, Keyon Dooling,
Sebastian Telfair, Tyronn Lue, Sam Cassell,
Anthony Carter, Jason Williams, and Dan Dickau
are a few that come to mind..... FULL

is far from great or anything to get overly excited

a 21 million dollar check for Marbury to go away we
can give this kid a little more money to entice him

Bulls
backup point guard Chris Duhon, during a visit

coach Mike D'Antoni and was offered a two-year
contract believed to be more than $7 million,
according to league sources.
Duhon

A
person with knowledge of the situation said that
